Ptenín lies in the southern part of the Plzeň region. The first written mention of the municipality dates back to 1227. The village of Újezdec is also part of the municipality.

The Baroque château in Ptenín belongs to the municipality. It was created under Count Ferdinand Morzin between 1728 and 1738, by rebuilding a Gothic fortress. A statue of Saint Jude Thaddeus also stands in the village.
